What is wire EDM?

Wire EDM (Wire Electrical Discharge Machining) is a precision machining process. It uses a thin metal wire to cut conductive metals by electrical sparks. There is no mechanical cutting force, so it can machine hardened steel, carbide, titanium and other hard materials. It is widely used to make mold inserts, punches, thin parts and complex-shaped components.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here you can find answers to frequently asked questions about custom CNC & EDM machining, material options, tolerances, quotation and delivery. Our team is ready to assist with any extra concerns.

Wire EDM is suitable for electrically conductive materials such as hardened tool steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, carbide, copper, and aluminum. It is particularly effective for hardened materials that are difficult to machine using conventional cutting methods.

Wire EDM can deliver high dimensional and positional accuracy, with micron-level capability for suitable applications. Actual results depend on material, thickness, geometry, cutting conditions, and tolerance requirements specified on the engineering drawing.

Wire EDM can produce intricate profiles, narrow slots, small openings, sharp internal corners, and complex contours. Multi-pass cutting and controlled flushing can be used to improve accuracy and surface quality, especially on thicker workpieces.

Yes. We support prototypes, low-volume batches, and repeat production. Wire EDM is particularly suitable for precision components with complex profiles, hardened materials, or tight dimensional requirements.

Wire EDM can achieve fine surface finishes through controlled multi-pass cutting. Additional processes such as polishing, deburring, grinding, or other specified finishing treatments can be provided when required by the application.

MOQ and lead time depend on material, thickness, geometry, tolerance, quantity, and inspection requirements. Prototype quantities and production orders are both supported, with lead times confirmed after technical review.

Yes. One major advantage of Wire EDM is its ability to machine electrically conductive hardened materials without introducing significant mechanical cutting forces. This makes it suitable for heat-treated tool steels, dies, molds, and precision components where post-hardening accuracy is critical.

Provide your 2D drawing or 3D model, material and hardness, workpiece thickness, critical tolerances, quantity, surface-finish requirements, and inspection specifications. Our engineering team can review the requirements and recommend the appropriate Wire EDM process and cutting strategy.
